Ann P. Kearney-Cooke, Ph.D
Director, Cincinnati Psychotherapy Institute
Psychologist. Professor. Author. Workshop Leader. Inspiration.
These are all words that describe Dr. Ann Kearney-Cooke. What these words fail to do, however, is convey the heart and soul of Kearney-Cooke’s work—the roots of which can be traced back to her Catholic education.
As a student of Bishop Conwell High School, Kearney-Cooke was active in several leadership organizations, such as the World Affairs Council and student council. However, it was Kearney-Cooke’s involvement in the school’s Peer Influence Program that seemed to shape her ideals and career. The motto of the program (“Love everyone, value yourself”) closely identified with Kearney-Cooke’s enthusiasm about the journey of self-discovery.
After graduating Bishop Conwell in 1974, Kearney-Cooke continued her education, graduating summa cum laude from California State College, earning a Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology from Michigan State University, and then a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from the University of Miami.
For her work in women’s health, Kearney-Cooke was awarded the Distinguished Scholar Award at The Partnership For Gender Specific Medicine at Columbia University. In 1996, she was honored as a Fellow of the American Psychological Association for her outstanding contributions to the psychology of women in the field of media psychology.
Over the years, Kearney-Cooke has authored several books and contributed to numerous publications about self-esteem, body image, and eating disorders in teenagers and women. She has served as an expert on dozens of television shows including Oprah, CNN, and the Today Show and is a frequent contributor to the New York Times and USA Today.
Kearney-Cooke is the Director of the Cincinnati Psychotherapy Institute and an adjunct professor of psychology at the University of Cincinnati and Miami University. In looking at what Kearney-Cooke has already accomplished in her career, it’s inspiring to know that her successes and achievements derive from the faith-based education she received at Bishop Conwell High School.
Kearney-Cooke is a leader, a scholar, and a role model. And now, in part to her Catholic education, she’s a promise fulfilled. |
